Rickets: An overview





What is Rickets?

    Rickets is a burning topic in the field of nutrition and other health sciences related domains, and also in research. There are a lot of questions like what is rickets? how it is caused? What are its symptoms? How it can be prevented before its onset? And, also, if anyone has been caught up of it, how he can be cured etc.........? 

 Weakening and softening of bones in children as well as in adults either due to vitamin D deficiency or low exposure to sunlight over a prolonged period of time leads to a condition known as Rickets.

Causes:
        Along with environmental factors, here are some reason which can contribute to the development of rickets not only childrens but also in elders specially in women living in those geographical regions where sun shines at its peak.
  • genetic causes
  • intake of diet with low vitamin D
  • less exposure to sunlight

Types of Rickets

  • hypophosphatemic rickets (vitamin-D-resistant rickets secondary to renal phosphate wasting)
  • vitamin D-dependent rickets (defects of vitamin D metabolism)
  • nutritional rickets (caused by dietary deficiency of vitamin D, and/or calcium, and/or phosphate)
  1. Rickets of the premature infant

  2. Rickets due to liver disease

  3. Calcium deficiency rickets


Symptoms
  • bone deformities
  • bone pain
  • impaired growth velocity
  • abnormal serum calcium and phosphorous level

Treatment
  • Parenteral infusion of calcium
  • Oral calcium supplements
  • Active vitamin D analogues
